“The fear is the worst part. Every time I hear footsteps coming down the hall, or the clink of key turning in the lock, I’m tempted to curl up in the corner like a hurt animal, whimpering, wanting to be safe. But I know if I do that, I’ll be giving in to a low part of myself, and I’ll feel even less human. And that is what they want to do, yes, that is what they want to do.”(227)

This shows her braveness and her strength. This is because she is now in a jail cell, and all she has is a journal and a pencil. With these two things she can basically bear her heart and soul throughout this lonely time period in her life. This shows that Maria Teresa is standing up for what she believes in and that she to can make a difference, yet there are still punishment that she has to face, and jail is one of them. Her first journal entry is on her 55th day in jail, she writes almost every single day after that.

This shows the courage that she has during this section. For example, she writes about how scared she is when the guards walk up and down the hallways to check on the inmates, she curls up in a corner of her cell until they go away because it frightens her. She stick to her gut and does what she is told and she explains that is this section of the novel.

Every Journal entry that she writes, is very descriptive and is very straight forward, so that the reader can put there own minds in that situation. The whole novel is about courage and finding how to be free. Maria Teresa’s section clearly shows that in to many ways to describe. Maria Teresa’s style, is deep and each sentence has a different meaning.
